Originally established
as the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council (DOTC) Police Department in
1977, the department now operates as the Dakota Ojibway Police Service.
As one of the longest
operating First Nation Police Services in Canada, D.O.P.S. is a
recognized stand-alone police agency located in southwestern Manitoba,
providing policing services to the following First Nation communities:
- Birdtail Sioux - south of Birtle,
Manitoba
- Population Approximately 450, 3 Members, 1 Detachment Clerk,
2 Vehicles
- Canupawakpa Dakota - South of Virden,
Manitoba
- Population Approximately 400, 2 Members, 1 Detachment Clerk,
2 Vehicles
- Roseau River - North of Emerson,
Manitoba
- Population Approximately 1200, 5 Members, 1 Detachment Clerk,
3 Vehicles
- Sandy Bay - North of Portage la
Prairie
- Population Approximately 4000, 8 Members, 2 Detachment Clerks,
3 Vehicles (1 boat, 1 quad, and 1 skidoo)
- Sioux Valley - Northwest of Brandon,
Manitoba
- Population Approximately 1500, 5 Members, 1 Detachment Clerk,
3 Vehicles
The D.O.P.S. investigates
all major crimes, such as murders, aggravated & sexual assaults,
in addition to enforcing all Federal & Provincial Statutes.
Band By-laws, where applicable, are enforced. D.O.P.S responds to
all calls and complaints - in any case, they will respond!
