Management of Genetically Modified Organisms Act
Slovenia
This act regulates management of genetically modified organisms (hereinafter: GMO) and determines measures for preventing and reducing possible adverse environmental effects, especially in relation to preserving biological diversity, and on human health, which could occur during contained use of GMOs, the deliberate release of GMOs into the environment or placing on the market GMOs or products containing GMOs or consisting of them or their combinations.

Slovenia recognizes the importance of developing a national biosafety information system to support effective national and international biosafety. By ratifying the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in September 2002 (Official Journal of Republic of Slovenia No. 89/02) Slovenia agreed, among other things, to build up a Slovenian Biosafety Clearing-House.

The main reason for building up a biosafety framework, whose integral part is a regulatory framework, is to put in place an enabling mechanism for making decisions on the safe transfer, handling and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
