Miller Technology Inc. selected as a Canadian Innovation Leader

Sunday 14 November 2004 | North Bay

A North Bay, Ontario company is being recognized today as a national role model for innovation in Canada. Mr. Bob Wood, MP for Nipissing, on behalf of the Honourable Allan Rock, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the National Research Council (NRC), had high praise for Miller Technology Inc., announcing that the firm was being acknowledged by NRC as one of Canada's Innovation Leaders.

Founded in 1979, the North Bay-based company has grown from a garage-based start-up to a global supplier of the best customized underground mining vehicles. Miller Technology Inc. is a significant local employer with 35 staff and about $8 million-a-year in sales. While Canada is the company's major market, its vehicles, built to ISO 9001:2000 standards, are at work in countries around the world, including the United States, Tanzania, Chile and Peru.

"We would like to commend Miller Technology Inc. for its entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated desire to innovate, and are pleased to be a partner in their success," said Minister Rock. "Industrial assistance programs such as the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) play a vital role in helping Canadian companies weather change in the marketplace, develop cutting-edge technologies, and find new niches for their products."

"Miller Technology Inc. is a great example of how collaboration between NRC and industry can foster further economic development in Northern Ontario," said Mr. Wood. "This recognition by NRC is a boost for the firm and the region." In an industry undergoing major technological change, Miller Technology's market edge has been constant innovation, an approach that has succeeded with longstanding support from NRC-IRAP. This federal initiative works closely with all kinds of small and medium-sized enterprises, helping them grow their businesses, increase their competitiveness, and enhance their impact in the marketplace.

"We are proud to celebrate the success of this company and to encourage Canadian innovation," said Dr. Arthur Carty, President of NRC.

"NRC-IRAP has been involved with us from the start and this R&D and networking support has allowed us to undertake cutting-edge design projects in which there were no guarantees of success," said Kent Miller, Operations Manager, Miller Technology Inc.

Recognized globally for research and innovation, Canada's National Research Council (NRC) is a leader in the development of an innovative, knowledge-based economy for Canada through science and technology.
