Home Newsroom 2006 News releases 2006-10-18: Minister Day applauds law enforcement agencies in two separate drug seizures

Minister Day applauds law enforcement agencies in two separate drug seizures

October 18, 2006 -- Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, released this statement following the seizure of drugs and charges laid in two separate incidents last week.

Charges were laid against 16 individuals in Ontario and nine individuals in the United States for allegedly distributing ecstasy tablets from Toronto to Windsor, Ontario and then across the US/Canada border. These charges follow a six month joint investigation by the RCMP and the Drug Enforcement Administration in Michigan along with assistance from the Canada Border Services Agency and the Sterling Heights Police Department.

An individual was charged with trafficking in cocaine and ecstasy, following a routine vehicle inspection by the RCMP Roving Traffic Unit near Headingly, Manitoba.  The value of this seizure is conservatively estimated at between two and five million dollars.

“The six month joint investigation in Ontario is a prime example of how law enforcement agencies in Canada and the US work together to counteract drug trafficking.  The incident in Manitoba is an example of our law enforcement officers’ vigilance, even during the most routine operations, to ensure that illegal drugs are kept off the streets.”

“Canada’s new government has made a commitment to tackle crime in our communities and these latest arrests clearly demonstrate that this commitment is being met. On behalf of the government and all Canadians, I would like to thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their tireless and cooperative efforts to keep our communities safe.”
