Manager, Monographs Program

This is a continuing position.

Background
The Publishing Group of CISTI seeks a dynamic, highly motivated individual to manage The Monograph Program Group. CISTI’s Publishing Group under the NRC Research Press and NRC Press brands is Canada’s largest publisher of scientific and technical peer reviewed research. The group has a Monograph Publishing program that publishes research monographs and conference proceedings. In addition, the Publishing Group currently publishes 15 journals, and has a Publishing Services program that currently supports 13 client journals.. The Publishing Group’s mandate is to support Canadian researchers by providing a leading-edge, national platform for publishing Canadian and international research. CISTI’s Publishing Group’s Monograph program currently has a back list of 80+ books and publishes 8 to 10 new books per annum. The Publishing Group operates on a cost recovery basis with the subscription and monograph sales supporting our operations.

Your Challenge
The Head of the Monograph Program is responsible for a broad range of business related activities conducted within the Publishing Group. The incumbent will support the Chairperson and Monograph Board in selecting manuscripts for peer review: manage all aspects of editing and production of monographs; develop and support marketing campaigns for the program and individual monographs; negotiate with electronic aggregators and distributors and other publishers to increase sales and market reach; seek out new sources of funding; manage the financial and human resources of the program and keep abreast of scholarly publishing trends and technologies.

Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates.

Education
Bachelors Degree preferably in a Science or Engineering discipline.

Experience
Experience of Monograph publishing
Experience of marketing monographs
Experience in negotiating business contracts
Experience in seeking funding for publishing
Experience in leading teams

Condition of Employment
Enhanced Reliability Check

Language Requirements
Bilingual imperative (CBC/CBC).

Note: In the event that no qualified bilingual candidates are identified, NRC may consider candidates who demonstrate the capacity to achieve these levels within two years.

Assessment Criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies:
Knowledge of the production and distribution processes for scholarly monographs
Knowledge of the scholar publishing marketplace, trends and issues
Knowledge of funding alternatives for monograph publishing in Canada
Knowledge of copyright law as it applies to a scholarly publisher

Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC's directives.

Salary Range
From $66,638 to $77,738 per annum plus the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 a year to the candidate who meets the language requirements.
