Privacy Policy

The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP (CPC) is committed to providing visitors with a website that respects their privacy. This page summarizes the privacy policy and practices on CPC's site.

The CPC does not automatically gather any personal information from you, such as your name, phone number or e-mail or street address during your visit to its website. This information is only obtained if you supply it to us voluntarily, usually through contacting us via e-mail or by submitting a "Complaint Form" on this site. When the latter is done, the information that is received and stored is safeguarded to prevent unauthorized disclosure.  The web form site is equipped with a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption to ensure a secure connection between the server and an SSL-compatible browser.

All personal information you do provide is protected under the federal Privacy Act. This means that, at the point of collection, you will be informed that your personal information is being collected, the purpose for which it is being collected and that you have a right of access to the information.

Visitor information is not disclosed to anyone except CPC personnel who need the information to respond to a request. The information you give us will be shared with another government department ONLY if your inquiry relates to that department. We do not use the information to create individual profiles, nor do we disclose this information to anyone outside those in the federal government who need to provide you with a response.

The CPC employs software programs to monitor network traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. This software receives and records the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that has contacted our Web site, the date and time of the visit and the pages visited. We make no attempt to link these addresses with the identity of individuals visiting our site unless an attempt to damage the site has been detected.

The CPC does not use "cookies" to track how our visitors use this site or to determine sites previously visited. (A "cookie" is a file that may be placed on your hard drive without your knowledge by a Web site to allow it to monitor your use of the site.)

Questions or comments regarding this policy, or the administration of the Privacy Act in the CPC may be directed to the Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator by e-mail to BaxterK@cpc-cpp.gc.ca or by calling 1-800-267-6637.
