Research Program: Virtual and Reconfigurable Manufacturing Technologies The goals of this strategic research program are to increase the competitive advantage of Canadian manufacturers by providing integrated technologies and systems that reduce cost and time to market and provides greater flexibility. Concurrent Engineering Intelligent software agents are being developed to optimize production planning and scheduling. An intelligent agent framework, combined with emerging artificial intelligence technologies, is being applied to dynamically integrate manufacturing resources to address the challenges of rapid product development and customization. Technologies are also being developed for the precision assembly of microcomponents (e.g. sensors, actuators, mechanical parts, etc.) into hybrid microsystems. A microassembly test bed is currently being developed for microcomponent handling and manipulation. Key words: artificial intelligence, production planning and scheduling, micro-assembly systems, and microdevices.
