Research Program: Precision and Freeform Fabrication Processes
The primary objective of the core research program is to conduct leading edge research and effectively develop innovative rapid manufacturing processes to reduce time, cost and to improve the functionality or extend the life of components. The goals of this program are to increase the competitive advantage of Canadian manufacturers. Precision Fabrication Processes Intelligent hybrid micro-processing systems are being developed for the fabrication of miniature functional components having complex 3D geometry with high accuracy and productivity. Experimental research and modeling are performed to predict laser material interaction in laser micro-processing, micro-electro-discharge machining and to enhance fundamental understanding of machine and process dynamics. The interaction of laser beam (wavelength, pulse duration and pulse energy profile etc.), motion system and the material properties are being investigated. Materials examined include glass (dielectric), metals, plastics, semi-conductors and other hard to machine materials for a number of applications in MEMS, bio-medical and opto-electronics. The intelligent micro-systems include micro-machines, intelligent micro-robots, sensors and micro-actuators and micro-grippers. Key words: Laser micro-processing, micro-electro discharge machining, hybrid machining, intelligent micro-systems
