Registered as a charity since 1988, the Canadian AIDS Society (CAS) is a national coalition of 123 community-based AIDS organizations across Canada. We are dedicated to strengthening the response to HIV/AIDS across all sectors of society, and to enriching the lives of people and communities living with HIV/AIDS.

Combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic constitutes a global challenge of staggering proportions. Over 40 million people live with HIV/AIDS, three million affected people died in 2003 alone, and the rate of new infections continues to rise.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, is the main advocate for global action on the epidemic. It leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

WHO and its HIV/AIDS department work within the family of UNAIDS Cosponsors to facilitate multisectoral efforts to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. WHO specifically serves as the convening agency within the United Nations system for HIV/AIDS treatment, care and support as well as for preventing the mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
