The Canadian Hemophilia Society exists to improve the quality of life for all persons with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders and to find a cure. Bleeding disorders are a family of diseases in which factor proteins or platelets which cause the blood to clot are missing or do not function properly, resulting in prolonged and excessive bleeding.

Von Willebrand disease (vWD) is the most common bleeding disorder that people have. There are various types of vWD. All the different types are caused by a problem with the von Willebrand factor (vWF). This is a protein in blood which is necessary for proper blood coagulation, or clotting.
