Biohazard Containment and Safety

The Biohazard Containment and Safety (BCS) Unit works with Agency scientists and technical experts to establish the biocontainment levels, procedures and protocols that are needed to work safely with animal and zoonotic pathogens, chemical hazards, and plant pests of quarantine significance, and to protect laboratory staff, the Canadian public, and the environment. The BCS Unit also coordinates the Laboratories Directorate's safety programs and provides guidance and support to the Agency's occupational health and medical surveillance programs.

The Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines, 3rd Edition-Draft

Since publication of the 2nd edition in 1996, adherence to the Guidelines has become mandatory for many laboratories handling human pathogens in Canada. This 3rd edition has been updated to reflect current biosafety and biocontainment principles and practices. The document has been written with a performance-based approach, which not only accommodates contemporary state-of-the-art technologies and ever-changing approaches to achieving containment but provides simple and sensible solutions as well.
