Morton Fellowship

The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics announces the 2006 Morton Fellowship competition. Intended to promote education and training in instrumentation and software through student research at NRC-HIA, the Morton fellowships were established in recognition of the interest and success of Dr. Donald C. Morton, Director General of NRC-HIA from 1986 to 2000, in developing these activities within the Institute and his commitment to the training of young scientists and engineers.

The fellowships (one in Victoria and one in Penticton) are open to all graduate students (Masters and Doctoral) from Canadian universities studying physics, astronomy or engineering. Each fellowship provides support for two years and requires that 2/3 of the time be spent at NRC-HIA. The total amount of support is $18,000/year with $9,000 coming directly from the fellowship. The additional $9,000 per year must be identified in the cover letter from the NRC-HIA employee supporting the application.

The application process requires a standard form (please e-mail Maggie Chartrand at maggie.chartrand@nrc.gc.ca to obtain a copy) along with:

  1. a curriculum vitae from the student,
  2. university transcripts,
  3. a statement of proposed research,
  4. two letters of reference, and
  5. a letter of support from the NRC-HIA co-supervisor.

Applicants are invited to contact David Crampton (david.crampton@nrc.gc.ca) or Tom Landecker (tom.landecker@nrc.gc.ca) for instrumentation-related inquiries and David Schade (david.schade@nrc.gc.ca) for software-related inquiries.

The application deadline is 7 March 2006.
