WIDAR - Wideband Interferometric Digital ARchitecture

EVLA Correlator

Conceptual Image of WIDAR array

What is WIDAR?

WIDAR is an acronym for Wideband Interferometric Digital ARchitecture. It is a method for digital correlation of very wideband signals from a radio interferometer. Data are digitally filtered and decimated into lower rate sub-bands which are separately cross-correlated and integrated before being seamlessly stitched together to yield the final wideband spectrum. Thus it is possible to use standard digital logic that runs at a much lower rate than the data sample rate.WIDAR also suppresses both alias products in the transition bands and quantization noise from strong lines. This technology will used in the correlator for the Expanded VLA (EVLA) project.
