Notice

Internet Transfer Update

Snapshot

  • Some individuals must dispose of their firearms because their licence has expired and their registration certificates have been revoked.
  • One option for disposing of a firearm is to transfer it to a properly licensed business.
  • Businesses may now use the online application to transfer these firearms to the business even if the owner’s licence has expired and the registration certificates have been revoked.

In previous bulletins, we informed you that the Internet transfer application could only be used to transfer a firearm if the firearm was registered to a properly licensed business or individual.

Some firearm owners have failed to renew their licence even though several reminders were mailed to them. Notices are being mailed to those owners to inform them that their registration certificates have been revoked since they are no longer licensed to possess firearms. The Notice of Revocation of Registration Certificates informs affected owners that they may refer the decision to revoke the registration certificates to a provincial court within 30 days for review. Otherwise, they must dispose of their firearms.

The notice provides several options for lawfully disposing of a firearm, including transferring the firearm to a properly licensed business. To simplify such transfers for owners and businesses alike, businesses may now use the online transfer application for these firearms even though the owner has an expired licence and the registration certificates have been revoked.

The online transfer process cannot be used for firearms that have never been registered. However, your businesses may continue to register those firearms directly to your business using the standard registration application process for businesses.
