Microbial Pilot Plant - Resources
The Microbial Fermentation Pilot Plant Facility's first asset is its multidisciplinary team, made up of microbiologists, chemists, biochemists and engineers. These people have developed over the years a very good knowledge of the biotechnology industry's needs. They have worked on a large number of projects, each one being different, and for a variety of clients and collaborators. The staff is attentive to the industry's constraints, whether strategic or financial. To ease technology transfer, special efforts are made to design bioprocesses that can be smoothly transferred into industrial settings. To better serve the Facility's clients, other groups from the BRI can be called upon for specialized assistance.
The Microbial Fermentation Pilot Plant has been designed to be an R&D; Pilot Plant. It offers flexibility & versatility, and a broad range of equipment needed to rapidly convert laboratory results into a semi-industrial process. The Facility includes:
- A molecular biology laboratory
- A BSL-1 Pilot Plant (bioreactors of various sizes: 3.5-L to 1500-L; includes 12 x 14-L-bioreactors)
- A variety of equipment for primary recovery, cell breakage and initial product capture
- A small BSL-2 laboratory (up to 20-L-fermentation scale)
- Laboratories and equipment for product purification, both small-scale and pilot-scale;
- Analytical laboratories for process monitoring and product characterization
