Mr. John M. Coleman

General Manager, NRC Centre for Surface Transportation Technology

Mr. Coleman was appointed as Manager of the NRC Centre for Surface Transportation Technology (NRC-CSTT) in July 1989, and has facilitated its development from a small research lab into a commercial business within NRC, since 1995. NRC-CSTT's specialty is research, engineering, and testing services for rail, road, and military heavy vehicles that it offers at a price to leading companies and government agencies worldwide. NRC-CSTT's client list includes among others, Bombardier, Canadian Pacific Railway, Canadian National Railways, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, the Canadian Department of National Defence, the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration, Railtrack, and SNC Lavalin.

Mr. Coleman received a Bachelor of Engineering degree (mechanical) at Carleton University and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario. Prior to his appointment at NRC-CSTT, he was business development officer for the NRC Institute for Mechanical Engineering; Executive Assistant to the President of NRC; and in charge of special projects at NRC's program services secretariat. Before joining NRC Mr. Coleman spent four years at the Ministry of State for Science and Technology in the field of policy analysis, and four years at the National Archives of Canada in the field of micrographics systems.

Mr. Coleman has served Canada's heavy vehicle research and development community as a member of the Railway Research Advisory Board, Transport Canada's Railway Safety Consultative Committee, and the Transportation Association of Canada's R&D Council and its Heavy Vehicle Research Coordinating Committee (HRVCC). He also chaired the HRVCC and led many conferences and seminars in heavy vehicle research and technology. He has received a Public Service Merit Award and a Golden Jubilee Medal of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II.
