Dr. Joan Kean-Howie

Dr. Joan Kean-Howie, Director General, NRC Institute for Marine Biosciences

Dr. Joan Kean-Howie, Director General of the NRC Institute for Marine Biosciences & Institute for Nutrisciences and Health, holds a B.Sc. from Mount Allison University (Sackville, NB) and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS).

In 1980 she joined the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada where she conducted research programs on invertebrate nutritional physiology until 1996. She then joined the Canadian Coast Guard where she worked in positions of increasing responsibility until her acceptance into the Career Assignment Program (CAP) in 1999. Upon completing CAP in 2001, she was appointed as Regional Director, Corporate Services for Fisheries and Oceans, Maritimes Region. From there she moved to Ottawa in 2002 to serve as Director General for Oceans and Aquaculture Science.

She was appointed to her current position 1 May 2005.
