Fast Facts: Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroids are synthetic variations of the male sex hormone, testosterone. They
are designed to build muscle.

acne |
masculinization |
may experience severe acne on the face and body |
Shrunken testicles* |
irregular periods |
premature closure of the growth plates leading to stunted growth. |
decreased sperm production which can lead to impotence |
deepening of the voice* |

enlargement of the prostate gland |

breast enlargement |
growth of the clitoris* |

*These effects may be permanent with prolonged use of
steroids |
Psychological Effects
- Irritability
- Uncontrollable bursts of anger ("Road Rage") which may lead to violence
- Severe mood swings, often leading to depression when steroid use is stopped
- Delusions
Long Term Effects
- Increased cholesterol level
- High blood pressure
- Heart, kidney and liver disease and/or malfunctions
- Sharing needles increases the risk of blood poisoning and infections (e.g. AIDS)
- Danger of black market products that may be diluted with other substances, some of which
may be toxic.
Anabolic Steroids and The Law
- Violation of Sport Federation and IOC anti-doping rules
- 1st offense - 4 year ban from sport/lifetime ban from government funding
- 2nd offense - lifetime ban from sport
- Loss of record/loss of medal
