Biography

Adrien Pilon has been with the National Research Council of Canada since 1994. He is Director of the Environment Sector of the NRC Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) in Montreal. He obtained his Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences from Université du Québec à Montréal in 1982. After working in the agro-environmental sector, he spent four years as a college professor teaching soil sciences, environment management and impact assessments, working subsequently as a consultant in hazardous wastes management and then as an environmental advisor for one of the world's largest petroleum companies. At BRI, he heads a multidisciplinary group of 100 scientists, engineers and technologists involved in R&D; of biotechnologies for bioremediation, biomonitoring, biomass conversion, sustainable development and nanobiotechnology. He is also co-founder and vice-president of the Montreal Centre of Excellence in Brownfields Rehabilitation (MCEBR). He represented Canada in 2001-2003 as the Chairman of the Ad Hoc International Committee on contaminated sites, and was a member of the task force of the National Round Table on Environment and Economy which elaborated a National Strategy for Brownfields Development in Canada. He was an active participant to the biotechnology strategy in Canada and contributed to the OECD project on "Industrial Sustainability through Biotechnology". |
