  Biography

Bernard Massie is Director of the Bioprocess Sector of the National Research Council of Canada's Biotechnology Research Institute (NRC-BRI). He joined BRI in 1985 and was serving until recently as Leader of the Genomics and Gene Therapy Vectors Group. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Université de Montréal in 1982 and then pursued postdoctoral research training at McGill University, working on DNA tumor viruses. His work focused initially on the development of large-scale production of recombinant proteins with the baculovirus expression system and lately on highly efficient adenoviral vectors as well as the development of stable expression systems for the production of diagnostic and therapeutic proteins in mammalian cells. His current research interest is in the development of biopharmaceuticals, namely gene therapy vectors, focusing mainly on adenovirus but also on retrovectors, AAV and lentivectors, as tools for functional studies.
