Address Changes

If you are licensed to possess firearms, you are required by law to notify your provincial Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) if your address changes. Notifying your CFO of any address changes will also help to ensure that you receive licence renewal applications and important information needed to stay in compliance with the law.

If you only have non-restricted firearms, the law gives you 30 days to notify your CFO of a change of address. You can do this by any of the following methods:

  • online,
  • by calling 1 800 731-4000, or
  • by sending a note with your complete name, firearms licence number, date of birth, old address, new address (both the mailing address and land location if they are different), your new phone number and the date of the move, to:

    Central Processing Site
    PO Box 1200
    Miramichi, New Brunswick E1N 5Z3

If you have restricted or prohibited firearms, you need to obtain permission from your CFO in advance to store the firearms any place other than the address listed in the registration records. If you will be transporting the firearms yourself, you can do this when you apply for the required Authorization to Transport (ATT). You can apply for an ATT by calling 1 800 731-4000 or by submitting a paper application (form CAFC 679). Call 1 800 731-4000 to obtain an ATT or permission to store restricted and prohibited firearms at your new residence.

Transporting your Firearms Safely

All firearms must be unloaded and transported in a safe and secure manner to deter loss, theft and accidents, as set out in the Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling of Firearms by Individuals Regulations.

If you will be moving restricted or prohibited firearms to another location, you will first need to obtain an Authorization to Transport (ATT) from the Chief Firearms Officer in the province where the firearms are located. You can apply by calling 1 800 731-4000.

If you ship the firearms, you have two options:

  • you may ship non-restricted firearms, restricted firearms and prohibited handguns to another location within Canada, using the most secure method offered by Canada Post that requires a signature upon delivery; or
  • you may ship any class of firearm by licensed carrier to a location inside or outside Canada. This is the only option for shipping prohibited firearms other than prohibited handguns.
