The National Research Council (NRC) operates the only glow discharge mass spectrometry (GD-MS) facility in Canada, with two VG 9000 instruments with cooled sources, and provides a specialty testing service for Canadian and International clients.

The instruments are capable of performing a survey elemental analysis of both conducting and semiconducting solids (e.g., gallium, cadmium, tellurium, gallium-arsenide, cadmium selenide, cadmium zinc telluride).

The facility, operated by the Chemical Metrology Group at the NRC Institute for National Measurement Standards (NRC-INMS), in Ottawa, Ontario, is staffed with highly skilled and experienced scientists who specialize in the application of GD-MS to difficult materials analysis problems. Typical applications of GD-MS analysis include routine monitoring of the purity of products, especially in the electronics industry. Determination of impurities at the parts-per-billion level in the solid is possible.
