Thyroid cancer starts in the cells of the thyroid gland. The 4 main types of thyroid cancer are: papillary carcinoma; follicular carcinoma; medullary thyroid cancer; and anaplastic thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer is a disease in which cancer cells are found in the thyroid gland, the butterfly-shaped gland that lies in front of the windpipe (trachea). Thyroid cancer is extremely rare, accounting for only about 1% of all cancers diagnosed.
