Fluorescing Cells
NRC scientists are exploring how disease-causing bacteria adhere to, or get their first grip on, our cells. To more clearly visualize this microscopic process, they've developed a sophisticated way to colour code different types of cells. The technique involves using antibodies to tag different types of cells with coloured fluorescent dyes. Here, the bacteria Proteus mirabilis (dyed green) are revealed adhering to much larger human cells (dyed red). Understanding this first step in the disease process will pinpoint new ways to fight bacterial infections. |
