NRC Receives Irish Trade Mission
NRC is committed to helping increase Canada's global reach in science and technology. As part of this commitment, NRC recently had the pleasure of hosting a Trade mission from Ireland. The focus of the mission was on the software and photonics sectors, and included a cross-section of prominent Irish politicians as well as the CEOs from a number of key Irish companies. The mission was led by Mary Harney, Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland.
While at NRC, Ms. Harney met with NRC President Dr. Arthur Carty. Discussion focused on complementary research areas between Canada and Ireland and future collaboration opportunities.
CEOs from Irish companies Firecomms PXIT, Intune Technologies, Plasma Ireland and Fibrepulse (all active in the photonics sector) had the further opportunity to tour the new NRC Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (NRC-CPFC). Construction of the NRC-CPFC is nearing completion with an anticipated opening date of Spring 2004. The centre will be a unique national resource of benefit to small and medium-sized firms active in the photonics sector. It will provide a facility to develop and test prototypes of new photonics devices, train highly qualified personnel, and serve as a leading-edge R&D resource and network centre for industry and university researchers.
Such visits play a key role in helping NRC develop international connections to help benefit Canada and Canadian businesses. In 2002-2003, NRC received 180 incoming foreign delegations and led close to 40 formal outgoing missions to other countries (including Australia, Brazil, India, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland). These missions were complemented by numerous other international activities, such as NRC participation in international conferences, organization of international workshops, etc. Each international linkage represents an opportunity for Canada to obtain new knowledge, access equipment and expertise and share the cost of large-scale research projects in order to support the effective development of technology-based Canadian SMEs.
