Planar waveguide for optoelectronic devices
Planar waveguide for optoelectronic devices
Planar waveguides are keys to faster optical communications. Fibre-optic cables are most efficient when carrying several simultaneous, parallel light-based messages – whether e-mails or phone calls. These are packaged together in different wavelengths of infrared light. Waveguide components are used at information crossroads to split the bulk light message into its component wavelengths. NRC researchers are using new materials and fabrication techniques to design smaller, more efficient waveguide components, such as the one shown here. Light enters from one side and is split into various wavelengths as it passes through the waveguide device.
