Quantum Dots
Quantum dots, (shown here in the fluorescing vials), are semiconductor nanocrystals, often referred to as artificial atoms. Quantum dots can be used to replace dyes as fluorescent biological labels allowing scientists to tag and track molecules in a cell. The dots are preferable to traditional organic dyes in diagnosis as they are more photo-stable. By changing the size and composition of quantum dots, NRC scientists are able to tune their light emitting characteristics and thus engineer desired photoluminescence, electroluminescent, and optoelectronic properties. |
