Climatic Engineering Facility
A B.C. rail commuter train gets snow and ice covered to test the operation of its doors under severe winter conditions. Researchers use the CSTT Environmental Chamber at NRC to test the weather-related performance of everything from military vehicles to navigation buoys and padlocks. The 30 by 6 by 6 meter chamber (seen here) is a weather machine: it can simulate summer and winter conditions ranging from -51 °C to +55 °C. It can also make snow, rain drizzle and fog. This means researchers can test an entire vehicle, including its heating, ventilation and AC systems, under real-world conditions. |
