Burner Rigs
Burner Rigs
The components in a gas turbine engine on an aircraft or used for electricity generation take a lot of punishment. They must be able to withstand temperatures up to 1500 ºC, in highly corrosive environments containing sulphur and salt. To find the best combination of superalloys and coatings to use for these components, NRC scientists use custom-made burner rigs, shown here. The rig is a desk-top combustor that enable researchers to simulate the conditions inside an engine. Thus they can easily and inexpensively evaluate and develop new alloy-coating systems.
