An NRC researcher looks into a unique, aquarium-like tank used for testing the flying characteristics of futuristic, insect-sized micro-aerial vehicles. The four-metre long and one-by-one meter sided prototype tank is completely filled with water. A vertical strut (
silver, at left) holds the test model and moves it via a motorised carriage on top of the tank. The green and red colours are dyes released at the leading and trailing edges of the wings in order for researchers to visualize the flow patterns over the wings.
