Commissioner’s Statement

It is with great sadness that I announce the deaths of Cst. Marc Bourdages and Cst. Robin Cameron in the service of their country. The loss of these two sworn members came as a result of a shooting incident near Mildred, Saskatchewan, on July 7, 2006.

These two dedicated members represent the commitment and dedication of all those who work to protect our citizens and communities. On July 7 they went to work not knowing what the next few hours would hold for them. One week later, they have joined the ranks of the fallen.

It is impossible to describe the grief that so many will experience in the aftermath of this tragedy. Robin Cameron leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter; Marc Bourdages was married to a fellow member and also leaves a child behind – a nine-month-old son.

At this point we must do all that we can to support the families and loved ones of these brave officers. It is equally important that we support our fellow members, especially those who knew and worked with Marc and Robin.

We must look deep into our hearts to accept what has taken place, as we use all available resources to continue searching for the man being sought in connection with this incident.

The ongoing search for 41-year-old Curtis Alfred Dagenais underscores the fact that our work must continue despite our grief. Today, and every day, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, alongside local and provincial police forces, recommit ourselves to the goal of keeping Canada and Canadians safe. To carry on with our work is the highest tribute we can pay to our fallen comrades.

Today we recognize with gratitude and respect that two of our own paid the highest price in the service of the people of Canada. Along with our sadness comes a sense of pride that such commitment exists.

On behalf of the RCMP and the entire policing community, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families of these fallen members and to everyone touched by this terrible tragedy.

Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Commissioner
