Title: Eastern Ontario School-Based Anti-Violence Program
Applicant/Beneficiary: The Kingston Learning Centre
DESCRIPTION: The project aimed at enhancing
awareness of family violence issues and their consequences in the public school
system and to implement an effective early intervention tool to be used with
school aged children. As part of this project a series of workshops were developed
and held to train Education Assistants to become certified family violence
facilitators within the school system.
Title: Fighting the Demons: sexually exploited youth - A Theme Paper
Applicant/Beneficiary: Save the Children Canada
DESCRIPTION: The project produced a thematic paper for presentation
at the Second World Congress on Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children
in December 2001, in Yokohama, Japan. The paper aimed at presenting a successful
framework for helping youth to exit the sex trade and prevent others from entering
it. This project promoted an approach to effective prevention and intervention
strategies in dealing with child sexual exploitation.
Title: Stuart Lake Community Safety Strategy - Phase I
Applicant/Beneficiary: Stuart Lake Community Services Society
DESCRIPTION: The project supported the development of a
community protocol for dealing with women and children in domestic crisis situations
that require removal from the home to safety in a local safe haven facility
for short term stays. The protocol will provide for improved referral services
and assistance to victims of domestic abuse in Fort St. James thereby increasing
the ability of service providers to support victims of domestic violence.
The project assisted in increasing awareness about family violence issues
in the community and enhancing community coordinated approach to domestic violence
prevention/intervention.
Title: PEI Victims of Family Violence Act, 3 Year Evaluation
Applicant/Beneficiary: Victim Services, Office of the Attorney
General of the Government of Prince Edward Island
DESCRIPTION: The project aimed at determining the effectiveness
of the PEI Victims of Family Violence Act in meeting the needs of
victims and to promote knowledge of the effectiveness of the legislation in
PEI. The evaluation looked at issues such as experience with Emergency Protection
Orders (EPO), reaction to PEO and impact of EPO and concerns about the Act
aimed at providing suggestions for improvement of the Act. The results of the
Evaluation will be shared with stakeholders and other provinces. The study
will help to improve the criminal justice system response to family violence.
It also helps to enhance knowledge about the effectiveness of the Act among
general public and other provinces where similar legislation is being considered.
Title: Healthy Relationships Website Phase III - YouCan!
Applicant/Beneficiary: YouCan
DESCRIPTION: This Website aims to increase awareness among
youth of the quality of their relationships and to provide them with tools
to make informed decisions regarding these relationships. This phase of the
project supported the development, testing and launching of this interactive
website. The project assists in promoting knowledge about violence in intimate
relationships and helps enhancing prevention of this problem among youths.

Title: Educating on Family Violence - A WebSite
Applicant/Beneficiary: Law Courts Education Society of British
Columbia
DESCRIPTION: This project supported the development of an
interactive website to teach users about family violence and dating violence,
and to direct them as to where to get help and information. This website will
provide users with an increased awareness of what constitutes family and dating
violence. It will contain knowledge of resources and information about family
and dating violence, and where to obtain them. This website will enhance the
prevention of family and dating violence through education and knowledge sharing.

Title: Métis Women - Breaking the Cycle Phase I - A Training Project
Applicant/Beneficiary: Métis National Council of Women
DESCRIPTION: This project supported holding "Train the Trainer" regional
workshops for Métis women, to address violence against women and children
in Métis communities. The Métis women who attended the workshops
will be able to utilize the information and tools within the communities to
educate others about the issue thereby encouraging community involvement in
addressing family violence in Métis communities.
Education and awareness will promote the well-being of Métis women
and their children, by providing improved responses to family violence within
these communities.
Title: Information Awareness Campaign on Dating Violence
Applicant/Beneficiary: Le groupe jeunesse
DESCRIPTION: The project supported the production and mailing-out
of educational materials on dating violence to Personal and Social Education
teachers in secondary schools in the province of Quebec's major urban areas.
The project has produced a teaching guide and classroom exercises through which,
this difficult topic is explored within the schools in Quebec. As well, a promotional
poster is produced for use in schools that offers a further support and reinforcement
of the issues. This teaching resource tool will enhance awareness on prevention
and early detection methods of dating violence and provide improved responses
to family violence within the secondary school population in Quebec.
Title: Senior's Resource Guide
Applicant/Beneficiary: The People's Law School
DESCRIPTION: The project supported the production of an
issue of the People's Law School newsletter for raising awareness on a number
of important issues for seniors, including elder abuse, and relevant resources
available for this group in British Columbia. This newsletter will raise awareness
of the public legal education and information services provided for seniors
in the province of British Columbia. The publication includes an entire section
on elder abuse, which provides both information and service resources available
to seniors and their caregivers.
Title: PLENA Reprint Project
Applicant/Beneficiary: Public Legal Education Network of
Alberta (PLENA)
DESCRIPTION: The project supported the reprinting of a number
of family violence booklets in order to ensure a wide distribution of family
violence information to those in need in the province of Alberta. Reprinting
of these informational brochures will promote access to family violence information
and will ensure continued information sharing to both the general public and
service providers within the province of Alberta.

Applicant/Beneficiary: Public Legal Education Association
(PLEA) of Saskatchewan
DESCRIPTION: This project provided financial support for
reprinting of four family violence brochures as there was a high demand for
these brochures in the province. The brochures will provide the necessary information
to individuals in need within the province of Saskatchewan. The project helps
in promoting family violence information and thus, reducing the risk of victimization.

Applicant/Beneficiary: PLEA Saskatchewan
DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this project was to provide
female victims of spousal abuse with relevant legal information, in a safe,
inconspicuous manner, enabling women to keep the resource tool/information
with them without alerting the abuser. By distributing relevant information
through lipstick tubes, the project provided safe access to relevant legal
information to these women on how to safely get our of a violent relationship.
The tube delivers accurate information in a safe, inconspicuous manner, enabling
women to keep the resource tool/information with them without alerting the
abuser. The project promotes awareness of the issues and safety and prevention
measures for victims of spousal assault.
Title: Violence Against Women 20th Anniversary Symposium - BC
Applicant/Beneficiary: Justice Institute of British Columbia
DESCRIPTION: This project supported a forum (conference)
for practitioners, policy makers, criminal justice personnel and survivors
of violence to examine the benefit and value of government and community based
initiatives that have been undertaken in the past thirty years to respond to
violence against women and children.
The Symposium provided an opportunity for exchange of information and networking
among those involved in relevant works. It offered new approaches and ways
to address the problem of violence against women in order to reduce the risk
of further victimization.
Title: Creating a National Link between Front-line Legal Educators/Researchers
on Anti-Violence Centres
Applicant/Beneficiary: Canadian Association of Sexual Assault
Centres (CASAC)
DESCRIPTION: This project aims at improving the treatment
of women and their children who are victims of family violence through several
measures: the development of a communication/ computer linkage between anti-violence
centers across Canada to facilitate information sharing about research, legislation
and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and identification
of effective interventions in legislative reforms in relation to violence against
women; and a pilot project aimed at addressing systemic issues of inequality
in cases of violence against women and ways in which the justice system can
better protect and serve victims of violence against women.
This project will assist in improving capacities of Anti-violence centres
across Canada to address family violence issues and enhance improved response
to the needs of women and children victims of family violence. The project
will be completed in 2002-2003.
