Group Fact Sheet (pdf)
The Environmental and Analytical Chemistry group investigates emerging contaminants and their degradation products in soil, sediment, water and various biological receptors. In view of growing worldwide interest in "green technologies," the group conducts research to understand transport, fate and impact of hazardous chemicals in the environment. Drawing on the skills of a multidisciplinary team of chemists, biochemists, and chemical engineers, this research team has developed considerable expertise in: the analysis and biodegradation of persistent substances such as polychlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, energetic chemicals and new substances. The group places more emphasis on the development of solvent-free sample preparation methods, which can be used to analyze potential emerging contaminants in soil, sediment and biological matrices. Also, the group devotes part of its research to the development of in vivo and in vitro (bio)chemical assays to analyze and optimize processes related to the combustion of biomass to liberate hydrogen and extract valuable products from biomass and feedstock.
