MINISTER OF JUSTICE ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF CHAIR OF CANADIAN HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL

OTTAWA , December 20, 2004 --The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, today announced the appointment of Grant Sinclair as Chair of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

Mr. Sinclair received his LL.B from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1962 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1964. He also earned an LL.M from Yale University in 1965 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1981. Mr. Sinclair has served as a member of the former Human Rights Tribunal from 1989 to 1997. In 1999, Mr. Sinclair was appointed Vice-Chairperson of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

“Mr. Sinclair’s involvement and experience in a number of cases that have had a significant impact on human rights in Canada will be an invaluable asset to the Tribunal, ” said Minister Cotler.

The mandate of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal is to provide Canadians with an improved quality of life and an assurance of equal access to the opportunities that exist in our society through the fair-minded and equitable interpretation and enforcement of the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Employment Equity Act
