BRITISH COLUMBIA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

, April 16, 1997 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointment:

Bryan Findlay Ralph, Q.C., of North Vancouver is appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver. He replaces Mr. Justice K.E. Meredith, who retired.

Mr. Justice Ralph graduated in law from the University of British Columbia in 1967, and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1968. He obtained a Master of Laws degree from the London School of Economics in 1976.

Mr. Justice Ralph first practised law with the firm of Sutton, Braidwood in Vancouver. In 1970, he joined the Legal Aid Society of British Columbia, where he acted as Executive Director from 1976 to 1979. He was Executive Director of the Legal Services Society until 1982, when he became Director of the University of British Columbia's Legal Clinic. He acted as Deputy Secretary of the Law Society of British Columbia in 1986, and has been Secretary since 1988.

This appointment is effective immediately.
