MANITOBA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

, August 28, 1997 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Marc M. Monnin, of Winnipeg, is appointed a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He replaces Mr. Justice J.G. Smith, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Monnin graduated in law from the University of Manitoba in 1977, and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1978.

Mr. Justice Monnin has practised civil litigation and administrative law with the firm of Aitkins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson, with whom he has been a partner since 1984. He has also been a part-time lecturer in transportation law at the University of Manitoba and has taught civil procedure at the Bar Admission Course, Law Society of Manitoba. He was a Bencher of the Law Society from 1990 to 1994. Mr. Justice Monnin is a member of the Association des Juristes d'Expression française du Manitoba.

This appointment is effective immediately.
