QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT
OTTAWA, January 13, 2000 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Honourable Anne McLellan, today announced the following appointment:
Richard G. Mongeau of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Quebec Superior Court, District of Montreal. He replaces Justice Jean Filiatreault who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Mongeau obtained is LL.B. from McGill University in 1970, and was called to the Quebec Bar the following year. Until his appointment, he has been practising law with the Montreal firm of Mongeau Harvey, primarily in the fields of civil
litigation, administrative law, business law, health law, labour code law and criminal law. Mr. Justice Mongeau has appeared before all levels of courts in Canada and also before numerous Commissions including the McDonald Commission and the
Keable Commission. Since 1998, he has been the chief negotiator for the Government of Canada in the matter of the Quebec Crees' land claim for the offshore islands in the eastern part of James Bay and in the southern part of Hudson Bay.
He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Quebec Bar and the Bar of Montreal. Mr. Justice Mongeau is a member of many community and volunteer organizations, including Info-Crime Québec and l'Association des hôpitaux du
Québec.
This appointment is effective immediately.
