DEPUTY CHIEF COMMISSIONER APPOINTED TO THE CANADIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

OTTAWA, June 6, 2002 -- The Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced that Ms. Anne Adams has been appointed Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) for a three-month term. Ms. Adams will fulfill the role of Chief Commissioner on an interim basis until one has been appointed.

Ms. Adams has been with the CHRC since 1999 when she was appointed as a commissioner. She also brings with her twenty-five years in the public service and six years in private practice. Her distinguished career with the federal government has enabled her to develop innovative and progressive approaches to a number of complex policy issues including employment equity and women's employment. In 1996, she carried this knowledge and expertise with her as she launched AEA Strategies and Development Inc. - a consultation firm specializing in employment equity and international development. Ms. Adams also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Montreal and a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen's University.

This appointment is effective immediately.

The mandate of the Canadian Human Rights Commission is to promote human rights principles, and to discourage and reduce discriminatory practices by dealing with complaints of discrimination on the prohibited grounds in the Canadian Human Rights Act. The Chief Commissioner is the principal spokesperson on issues of human rights and public policy and represents the Commission and Canada at international fora.
