QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, May 13, 2005 – Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Jacques Dufresne of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec. He replaces Mr. Justice A. Forget who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Dufresne received a Bachelor of laws from the Université de Sherbrooke in 1972 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1974. He was a Justice of the Quebec Superior Court since 1998. Before being appointed to the Bench, he has been a partner with the firm Ogilvie Renault in Montreal where he practised primarily in the areas of civil and administrative law.

This appointment is effective immediately.

The Honourable Lise Côté of Montreal is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Quebec. She replaces Mr. Justice R. Nuss who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Côté obtained a Bachelor of laws from the Université de Montréal in 1975 and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1976. She has been a Justice of the Quebec Superior Court since 1995. Prior to her appointment, she was a partner with the firm Deslongchamps et Corte, specializing in criminal law.

This appointment is effective July 3, 2005.
