QUEBEC JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, May 20, 2005 – The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, today announced the following appointment:

Sylvie DeVito, of Montréal is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec. She replaces Madam Justice L. Côté who was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec .

Madam Justice DeVito received a Licence in Law from l’Université de Montréal in 1978, and was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1979.

At the time of her appointment, she was a partner with the firm Bélanger Sauvé and practised primarily in the areas of civil law, administrative law and municipal law.

Madam Justice DeVito is a former member of counsel of the Canadian Bar Association and a former member of counsel and president of the Quebec Division of the Canadian Bar Association. In addition, she has been a member of many committees of the Barreau du Québec and the Barreau de Montréal. She is a frequent lecturer and the author of several legal publications.

This appointment is effective July 3, 2005.
