ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, February 15, 1996 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointment:

John Francis McCartney of Thunder Bay is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court (General Division) in Thunder Bay. He replaces Mr. Justice S.R. Kurisko who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice McCartney graduated in law from the University of Ottawa in 1965 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1967. He then joined the firm Seaman, Kajander and Blanchard in Thunder Bay and practised general litigation. Since 1969, he has been practising civil and criminal litigation with the firm McCartney, Judge and Murray. Mr. Justice McCartney has also been an assistant part-time Crown Attorney and a standing agent for the Minister of Justice. Since 1978, he has also been Area Director of the Ontario Legal Aid Plan for the district of Thunder Bay.

This appointment is effective immediately.
