ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED



OTTAWA

, December 19, 1996 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointment:

Stephen Thomas Goudge, Q.C. of Toronto is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal of Ontario. He fills a newly created position.

Mr. Justice Goudge graduated in law from the University of Toronto in 1968 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1970. He has since practised general litigation, including civil and commercial, labour and Charter litigation, as well as administrative litigation, with the firm known today as Gowling, Strathy & Henderson. Mr. Justice Goudge was certified a Specialist in civil litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1989. From 1974 to 1986, he lectured on labour law and native rights at the University of Toronto.

Mr. Justice Goudge has been a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1991 and has chaired its Equity of Access to Legal Education and Practice Committee, its Legal Aid Area Committee and its Government Relations Committee. Mr. Justice Goudge has been a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers since 1995.

This appointment is effective immediately.
