MANITOBA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA

, August 7, 1996 -- The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Allan Rock, today announced the following appointment:

John Adam Menzies of Dauphin is appointed a judge of the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench (Family Division) in Brandon. He replaces Mr. Justice J.A. Duncan, who was transferred to Winnipeg to replace Mr. Justice J.A. Scollin, who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Menzies graduated in law from the University of Manitoba in 1980, and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1981. He has since been practising with the firm of Johnson & Company, with whom he has been a partner since 1985. Mr. Justice Menzies has practised civil and criminal litigation, as well as family law. Since 1985, he has also been Regional Counsel for the Director of Child and Family Services for the Parkland Region, and since 1992, has been Counsel for Valley River First Nation Treaty #292.

From 1983 to 1992, Mr. Justice Menzies was an elected member of the Law Society of Manitoba and held various positions, such as Chairperson of the Legal Aid Liaison Committee and member of the Admissions, Education, Discipline, and Judicial committees.

This appointment is effective immediately.
