Mary M. Gusella

Profile

During a 32 year career in the federal Public Service, the last 11 at the Deputy Minister and equivalent level, Mary Gusella has acquired a wide-ranging set of competencies based on experience in management, international relations (Canada/US), federal-provincial relations, economic development, strategic planning, change management, crisis management, corporate human resources management, issue management, communications, marketing, policy development, program and service delivery, negotiation, mediation, stakeholder relations, consensus building, mentoring and coaching, legal and regulatory affairs, governance and relations with Boards of Directors.

Ms. Gusella has managed staff of over 1,000 and directed budgets of over $400 million, been a chair as well as a member of boards of directors and advisory boards, developed government wide policies and legislation and worked on a direct basis with Ministers, Parliamentarians, heads of non-government organizations and private sector leaders.

Professional Experience

Leadership in:

  • Providing strategic leadership and overall management of several federal departments as well as of commissions and as president and CEO of a crown corporation
  • Developing change-oriented corporate approaches on the basis of values-based management structures and systems that are client sensitive and responsive to the public environment
  • Establishing a new institution of the federal government and managing it through a start-up process including the development of the original corporate vision and strategic plan
  • Working closely with advisory boards, as a chair as well as a member of boards of directors
  • Serving as President of the Institute of Public Administration during a fiscal restructuring period which re-established financial stability and achieved a surplus for re-investment
  • Developing Government-wide policies in areas such as communications and Crown Corporations legislation
  • Negotiation of Land Claims, consensus-building and mediation
