NEWFOUNDLAND JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, March 22, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Barbara Gale Welsh of the Newfoundland Supreme Court, Trial Division in Corner Brook is appointed a Judge of the Newfoundland Supreme Court, Appeal Division. She replaces the Mr. Justice Derek Green who was appointed Chief Justice of the Newfoundland Supreme Court, Trial Division.

Madam Justice Welsh received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1983. She was admitted to the Bar of Saskatchewan in 1984 and to the Bar of Newfoundland in 1989. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, Trial Division in Corner Brook in 1999.

This appointment is effective immediately.
