ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, May 2, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

Robert G. S. Del Frate, of Sudbury is appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Sudbury. He replaces Mr. Justice Meehan who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Del Frate received his Bachelor of Laws from the Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto in 1970, and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1972. He began practice with the Sudbury firm of Lacroix, Forest & Labrosse in 1972, where he specialized in civil litigation; especially professional negligence, medical malpractice and personal injury and insurance matters. He has been active in various legal professional organizations including the Advocates' Society, the Sudbury Law Association, the Canadian Bar Association and L'Association des Juristes d'Expression Française de l'Ontario and, at the time of his appointment was a partner in the firm Lacroix, Forest & Del Frate. During the course of his career, Mr. Justice Del Frate has been a frequent presenter at seminars to various professional groups in his area of practice. Mr. Justice Del Frate speaks English, French and Italian.

Ian S. McMillan, of Sault Ste. Marie is appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie. He replaces Mr. Justice Noble who has chosen to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice McMillan received a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1971, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1974. Since his admission to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1976, Mr. Justice McMillan has been in practice with the Sault Ste. Marie firm of Provenzano McMillan, practising primarily in the field of civil litigation, including contract disputes, motor vehicle claims, commercial and employment issues. Mr. Justice McMillan is a former President of the Algoma District Law Association and a Member of the Canadian Bar Association.

David J. Nadeau, of Kapuskasing is appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Cochrane-Timmins. He replaces Mr. Justice J.D. Bernstein who resigned.

Mr. Justice Nadeau received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario (Dean's Honour List) in 1983. He began practice with the Kapuskasing firm of Bourgeault Nadeau Brunelle Dumais, where he acquired general practice experience in family, corporate/commercial, and real estate law. He has particular experience in criminal law, having been appointed in 1995 as Assistant Crown Attorney for Cochrane North in North East Region and in 1999, Crown Attorney for that region. Mr. Justice Nadeau served as Deputy Judge of the Small Claims Court, District of Cochrane from1994 to 1995. Mr. Justice Nadeau speaks French and English.

These appointments are effective immediately.
