PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT

OTTAWA, August 31, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

Wayne D. Cheverie, Q.C., of Prince Edward Island is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island (Trial Division). He replaces the Honourable Armand DesRoches of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island who has been appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island - Trial Division.

Mr. Justice Cheverie received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1971. He studied law at Dalhousie University in Halifax receiving a Bachelor of Laws in 1974. He was admitted to the Bar of Prince Edward Island the following year. In 1977, Mr. Justice Cheverie became a partner in the Charlottetown firm of Campbell, Lea, Cheverie, Michael, McConnell & Pigot.

Mr. Justice Cheverie was first elected to the Legislature of Prince Edward Island in 1986. He served three terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and held various ministerial portfolios including Minister of Justice and Attorney General. Just prior to his appointment, he was Chair of the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission in Charlottetown.

This appointment is effective September 1, 2001.
