NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, December 6, 2001 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Malcolm H. Rowe of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland is appointed a Judge of the Appeal Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland. He replaces Mr. Justice J.J. O'Neil who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Rowe received a Bachelor of Laws from the Osgoode Hall Law School in 1978 and was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland the same year. He was appointed to the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland in 1999.

Carl Thompson, Q.C., of Corner Brook is appointed a Judge of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland. He replaces Mr. Justice R. Wells who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Thompson received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ottawa in 1969 and a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1973. He was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland the following year and began practice with O'Dea Green Neary & Puddester in St. John's. After serving as an Assistant Clerk with the House of Assembly of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Justice Thompson joined the Corner Brook firm of Poole Althouse Thompson & Thomas. At the time of his appointment, he was a partner with that firm practicing primarily in corporate-commercial law and related labour and civil litigation matters. He has appeared before both the trial and appellate courts in Newfoundland as well as the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court and the Tax Court of Canada.

Mr. Justice Thompson served as a Commissioner of the Newfoundland Law Reform Commission from 1980-1990. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1992.

These appointments are effective immediately.
