Almost every industry uses coatings and surface treatments to create affordable functional surfaces, built dedicated devices, protect substrates, or modify their behaviour. Surface and coating technologies are critical to many different industrial sectors such as aerospace, biomedical engineering, automobile, energy and materials processing.

The Surface Technologies 2006 workshops organized by the National Research Council Canada (NRC) will provide a discussion forum for engineers, scientists and managers from targeted industrial sectors and NRC researchers. Each workshop will target a specific industrial sector: Aerospace in Montréal, Biomedical in Boucherville, Transportation in London and Alternative Energy in Vancouver. The workshops will include presentations by leaders of the industry and NRC representatives as well as panel discussions on key issues and opportunities to be addressed by surface technologies. The objectives of the workshops are:

  • Identify current and future surface technologies needs in four key industrial sectors
  • Inform industry about NRC research and development capabilities
  • Identify strategic directions that will help the Canadian industry in acquiring advanced surface technologies.

The National Research Council Canada (NRC) is the Government of Canada's premier organization for research and development. Already strongly involved in R&D activities in surface technologies, NRC aims at identifying key directions for better addressing the emerging needs of the Canadian industry.

The information exchanged during the workshops will serve as road mapping information for planning future NRC activities in surface technologies and stimulate interactions between surface technologies users and service providers.
