Home Programs Corrections About Canada’s correctional system Working and learning in prisons
Canada’s penitentiaries provide programs and training to prepare inmates for life after prison. Inmates are expected to participate in programs, working or studying for six hours every weekday. The daily schedule in Canada’s penitentiaries also promotes self-discipline and encourages a normalized cycle in the life of inmates. Inmates learn skills to help them find and keep a steady job. For example, CORCAN is a program that trains inmates by helping them develop skills related to agribusiness, textiles, manufacturing, construction and services. Other inmates work in the kitchen or do cleaning or clerical work. During their leisure time inmates are encouraged to take part in sports, arts and crafts, personal development programs, religious activities and ethno-cultural events.
